BMW X5 E70 3.0d diff noises and planet gear failure

It's not uncommon for the later X5 E70 rear diff to suffer with planet gear failure in the rear differential housing.

To check this listen out for a clonking noise from the rear axle, especially when changing direction from forwards to reverse.
