BMW E60 5 Series 520d differential noises and whine problems

BMW 5 Series E60 N47 owners are now complaining about rear differential bearing noise.

It is a common issue with 5 Series 520d N47 with over 80,000 miles on the clock

Noises on the E60 & E61 5 series diff start with a low whirring and if left cause a loud whine that changes with the throttle position, if left the diff pinion bearings will collapse and the rear differential will become scrap.
